Tribute to Mr. Bashir Ahmad – A Legendary Master Craftsman of Nagina

Late Mr. Bashir Ahmad was a celebrated master craftsman and a guiding light in the traditional wooden handicrafts industry of Nagina, a town in District Bijnor, Western Uttar Pradesh. His extraordinary expertise in wood carving and brass inlay work on wood earned him nationwide recognition and deep respect within the artisan community.

A Nationally Recognized Artisan

In 1984, Mr. Bashir Ahmad’s unparalleled craftsmanship was honored with the prestigious National Award for his exquisite creation—a beautifully handcrafted wooden comb made from ebony wood. This esteemed award was presented to him in 1985 by the then President of India, Hon’ble Shri Giani Zail Singh ji, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. This recognition not only celebrated his personal talent but also brought the rich legacy of Nagina’s wooden artistry into the national spotlight.

A Revivalist of Nagina’s Wooden Craft Heritage

Following India's independence, the tradition of woodcraft in Nagina had nearly faded, with only a handful of families continuing the age-old practice. Mr. Bashir Ahmad’s family was among those rare custodians of this art. In the 1970s, he took a visionary step by modernizing and reviving the craft. He introduced new designs, diversified product offerings, and embraced innovation while maintaining traditional integrity.

Understanding the challenges faced by unemployed youth in his town and surrounding villages, Mr. Bashir Ahmad took it upon himself to provide them with training and livelihood. Many of these individuals had been migrating to metropolitan cities in search of work. Through his mentorship, thousands of young artisans were trained and empowered. Today, more than 10,000 people in Nagina and neighboring areas earn a living through the woodcraft industry, much of which traces back to his efforts.

For countless artisans, when asked about their mentor or "Guru", the answer is unanimous: “Late Shri Bashir Ahmad”.

Leadership and Social Contribution

Mr. Bashir Ahmad played an active role in the implementation of various artisan welfare schemes run by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Government of India. He organized multiple training programs, personally overseeing the skill development of more than 1,000 artisans. His vision laid the foundation for a thriving handicrafts industry in Nagina, which today enjoys international acclaim. The beautifully carved wooden items with brass inlay are exported globally, contributing around ₹3 crore (30 million INR) annually to the Indian economy in foreign exchange.

Founder and Guide of Nagina Crafts Development Society

Mr. Bashir Ahmad also served as a key figure in the “Nagina Crafts Development Society”, a self-driven community-based organization aimed at uplifting the artisan community. Under his leadership, the society achieved several notable milestones:

  1. Advocated successfully for tax exemptions on woodcraft in Uttar Pradesh.

  2. Facilitated employment for 1,582 unemployed youth, enabling them to become self-reliant through this craft.

  3. Organized fairs and exhibitions in metro cities with the support of the D.C.H., providing artisans with platforms for marketing and exposure.

  4. Conducted medical check-up camps to promote health awareness among artisans.

  5. Launched environmental awareness campaigns, promoting sustainability.

  6. Sponsored an eye-care camp, where 162 individuals underwent successful surgeries.

Promoting Education and Social Harmony

Understanding the importance of literacy, especially for adult artisans, Mr. Bashir Ahmad initiated a night school for uneducated craftspeople in Nagina. His contribution to education, health, and environmental awareness was as valuable as his work in the handicrafts sector.

He was deeply respected across all communities, known for his humility, dedication, and values. He truly lived by the philosophy of “Simple Living, High Thinking.”

Legacy That Lives On

Though Mr. Bashir Ahmad is no longer with us, his legacy continues to inspire generations of artisans. His life's work not only revived a fading craft but also transformed countless lives through employment, education, and empowerment.

श्री बशीर अहमद – नगीना के प्रसिद्ध शिल्पकार को श्रद्धांजलि

स्वर्गीय श्री बशीर अहमद नगीना, जनपद बिजनौर (पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश) के एक प्रसिद्ध एवं सम्मानित काष्ठ शिल्पकार थे। उन्हें लकड़ी की नक्काशी और पीतल जड़ाई (ब्रास इनले) में अद्वितीय महारत प्राप्त थी। उनके योगदान ने नगीना की हस्तशिल्प परंपरा को नई ऊँचाइयों तक पहुँचाया।

राष्ट्रीय सम्मान से सम्मानित कलाकार

वर्ष 1984 में श्री बशीर अहमद जी को उनके विशेष कलात्मक कार्य — काले आबनूस (Ebony) लकड़ी से बना सुंदर कंघा — के लिए राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार हेतु चयनित किया गया। यह प्रतिष्ठित सम्मान उन्हें 1985 में भारत के तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति, माननीय श्री ज्ञानी जैल सिंह जी द्वारा विज्ञान भवन, नई दिल्ली में प्रदान किया गया।

नगिना के हस्तशिल्प की पुनर्स्थापना

स्वतंत्रता के बाद नगीना में लकड़ी हस्तशिल्प से जुड़ी बहुत कम ही परिवार बचे थे। श्री बशीर अहमद जी का परिवार उनमें से एक था। 1970 के दशक में उन्होंने इस कला को एक नवीन दृष्टिकोण के साथ पुनर्जीवित करने का बीड़ा उठाया। उन्होंने कई नए डिज़ाइनों और उत्पादों की शुरुआत की तथा इस पारंपरिक कला को समकालीन जरूरतों से जोड़ा।

उन्होंने नगीना और आसपास के गांवों के अनेक बेरोजगार युवाओं को इस कारीगरी में प्रशिक्षित किया, जो महानगरों की ओर रोज़गार की तलाश में पलायन कर रहे थे। आज नगीना और उसके आस-पास के क्षेत्रों में 10,000 से अधिक लोग इस हस्तशिल्प से जुड़कर जीविकोपार्जन कर रहे हैं — और इसकी नींव श्री बशीर अहमद जी के समर्पण और दूरदर्शिता ने रखी थी।

सरकारी योजनाओं का सफल संचालन और सामाजिक सेवा

श्री बशीर अहमद जी ने भारत सरकार के विकास आयुक्त (हस्तशिल्प) कार्यालय के माध्यम से अनेक प्रशिक्षण योजनाओं का संचालन किया। उनके मार्गदर्शन में 1000 से अधिक कारीगरों को प्रशिक्षित किया गया। उनके अथक प्रयासों से नगीना की लकड़ी कारीगरी को अंतरराष्ट्रीय पहचान प्राप्त हुई। आज इस क्षेत्र से बने उत्पाद विदेशों में निर्यात किए जा रहे हैं, जिससे हर वर्ष लगभग 3 करोड़ रुपये की विदेशी मुद्रा देश को प्राप्त हो रही है।

नगीना क्राफ्ट्स डेवलपमेंट सोसाइटी के संस्थापक सदस्य

श्री बशीर अहमद जी "नगीना क्राफ्ट्स डेवलपमेंट सोसाइटी" के संस्थापक संरक्षक भी थे। इस संस्था ने उनके नेतृत्व में कई उल्लेखनीय कार्य किए:

  1. उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार से लकड़ी हस्तशिल्प को टैक्स-फ्री करवाना।

  2. 1582 बेरोजगार युवाओं को इस कला से जोड़कर स्वरोजगार के अवसर प्रदान करना।

  3. भारत सरकार के सहयोग से मेट्रो शहरों में मेलों का आयोजन कर कारीगरों को विपणन (मार्केटिंग) का अवसर देना।

  4. कारीगरों के स्वास्थ्य परीक्षण शिविर आयोजित कर उन्हें स्वास्थ्य के प्रति जागरूक करना।

  5. पर्यावरण संतुलन के लिए जागरूकता अभियान चलाना।

  6. एक नेत्र चिकित्सा शिविर का आयोजन, जिसमें 162 लोगों की आंखों का सफल ऑपरेशन हुआ।

शिक्षा और सामाजिक समरसता का संदेशवाहक

अशिक्षित कारीगरों को साक्षर बनाने हेतु श्री बशीर अहमद जी ने "नाइट स्कूल" की शुरुआत की, जो आज भी नगीना में संचालित है। उनके सामाजिक योगदान, शिक्षा, स्वास्थ्य और पर्यावरण क्षेत्र में जागरूकता अभियान उन्हें एक बहुआयामी समाजसेवी बनाते हैं।

वे नगिना शहर की सभी जातियों और समुदायों में समान रूप से सम्मानित थे। उनके जीवन का सिद्धांत था — “सादा जीवन, उच्च विचार”। हालांकि श्री बशीर अहमद जी आज हमारे बीच नहीं हैं, लेकिन उनका कार्य, योगदान और प्रेरणा हमेशा जीवित रहेगा। उन्होंने न केवल एक लुप्तप्राय कला को पुनर्जीवित किया, बल्कि हजारों लोगों के जीवन में रोजगार, शिक्षा और सम्मान की रोशनी पहुंचाई।
